Medicine Types (UK)

Note: This page is specific to the UK market.

To select a medicine type for medicine items:

  1. Go to Catalog > Items.

  2. Add a new medicine item or find and open the item you want to edit.

  3. On the General tab, select the medicine type from the Classification drop-down list.

  4. Select Save.

The medicine types listed in the following table are available.

POM

P rescription O nly M edicines

P rescription-only medicines from qualified prescribers (doctors, dentists, nurse or pharmacist independent prescribers, or supplementary prescribers)

POM-VPS

P rescription O nly M edicines - V et/ P harmacist/ S uitably Qualified Person

P rescription-only medicines prescribed by a veterinarian, pharmacist or a suitably qualified person

POM-V

P rescription O nly M edicines - V eterinarians

Prescription-only medicines prescribed only by a veterinarian

OTC

O ver t he C ounter

Over the counter medicines

NFA-VPS

N on- F ood A nimals - V et/ P harmacist/ S uitably Qualified Person

N on-food animal non-prescription medicine sold by a veterinarian, pharmacist or a suitably qualified person

AVM-GSL

A uthorized V eterinary M edicine - G eneral S ales L ist medicines

G eneral sales list medicines, obtained without a prescription from, for example, from a pharmacy or a supermarket

SAES

S mall A nimal E xemption S chemes

The SAES permits certain medicines to be placed on the market without a marketing authorisation (MA), subject to certain conditions.
